Spectrum glass – experiment number 1

I wasn’t sure about using a glass with another *COE, I thought it was a hassle it would get mixed up and it would be different schedules and generally was not really on complication that I wanted. But then I saw this pattern…and I had to have it…

Obviously that means that all of the things I couldn’t be bothered with are actually a problem for me now and (as ever) being a bit lazy I thought that I would see what I could do to work around them.
Mixing the glass up seems pretty easy to avoid since the glass is very different when placed next to Bullseye and Bullseye compatible glass, the clear is much clearer and the pattern is distinctive enough. It actually feels a bit different as well, much smoother and the edges are sharper (if seems).
The Spectrum firing schedules all seemed to be so similar to me that I thought it was worth seeing the results on my normal fuse schedule. It was fine and these are the results, this is a little higher at the top temperature than the schedules that I found, but it seems to have survived the trip.

The one thing I wasn’t expecting was that the glass was so easy to break, so easy in fact that a run shot straight through the middle of a circle that I scored out. I’m going to fuse that anyway and see how it all turns out, but it does limit me to only having clear on the bottom as the join may show up.
You see in the picture here that the piece on the left is using clear base glass and the pattern on the top and the one on the right is the clear on top. It was from different areas of the sheet, so the colour shift was not as dramatic as it looks. You can see the bottom layer of the patterned glass is showing in a white border round the glass, that’s because the clear was much bigger than the coloured glass.

* Co-efficient – which is the expansion/contraction of the glass when heated and cannot be mixed in the same project as it will strain the glass and cause cracks and breaks.
